Discover Low Power with the STM32L0 MCU Discovery Kit Available from Mouser

February 12, 2015 - Mouser Electronics, Inc. is now stocking the STM32L0538 Discovery Kit from STMicroelectronics (ST). This new Discovery Kit provides an easy‑to‑use development platform for the ST STM32L0 series of ultra‑low power microcontrollers. This new development tool includes an onboard E‑paper display as well as touch sensing, offering everything required for both beginners and experienced developers to quickly get started developing applications for the STM32L0 microcontroller series.

The ST STM32L0538 Discovery Kit, available from Mouser Electronics, is based on the STM32L053 microcontroller featuring 64KB of Flash, 8KB of RAM, and a 12‑bit ADC. The STM32L0 ultra‑low power microcontroller series is based on the ARM® Cortex‑M0+ core with low-power design features, targeting battery-powered and energy harvesting applications. The STM32L0 microcontroller series offers dynamic voltage scaling, an ultra-low-power clock oscillator, LCD interface, comparator, DAC, and support for hardware encryption. Intelligent peripherals including the USART, I2C, SPI, low power timer, and touch sense controller, reduce the load on the core. This results in fewer CPU wakeup cycles while contributing to decreased processing time and lower power consumption. Other features of the STM32L0 include a 12‑bit 1.4Msps ADC, 12‑bit DAC, short wake-up time, and crystal-less USB interface. Many peripherals are capable of operating in ultra‑low-power mode. The STM32L0 is available with up to 64KBytes of Flash, 8KBytes of SRAM, and 2KBytes of EEPROM. An AES 128‑bit encryption module is also included.

The STM32L0 Discovery Kit has a linear touch sensor onboard for touch applications. It also includes a unique 2‑inch 172x72 pixel E‑paper display for providing graphic and alphanumeric user feedback right on the Discovery board. Two pushbuttons and four LEDs provide user interactivity. The Discovery kit comes with demonstration firmware preloaded in the Flash memory of the STM32L053xx. The demonstrations use the linear touch sensor to select one of the displayed demo applications, viewable on the E‑paper display. Demos include having the kit behave as a USB mouse, as well as measuring the STM32L0 supply current while in different low-power modes.
